LMSD SCHOOL BOARD
RESPONSIBILITIES
What We Would Like to See from Our School Board
As Jewish families committed to fighting against antisemitism, we seek a school board that demonstrates a deep understanding of the challenges facing our community and actively works to address them. We want to see the following qualities and actions from our school board:
-
Acknowledgement of Antisemitism
It is essential that the school board openly acknowledges that antisemitism exists within our schools and communities. This recognition is the first step in addressing and combating it effectively. -
Understanding and Implementation of the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism
The school district has adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism, but it is crucial that everyone in the district including teachers, staff, school board members, and administrators fully understands and implements this definition. This will ensure consistent and effective recognition of antisemitism and provide clear guidelines on how to address it. -
Ongoing Training on Antisemitism
We strongly advocate for ongoing, comprehensive training for all staff members including administrators, teachers, and school board members. This training should also include how to handle conflicts involving antisemitism to ensure that students remain safe and respected in their learning environment. It's important that educators are equipped to address these issues appropriately and intervene effectively in a timely manner. -
Holding Administration Accountable
We expect the school board to hold school administrators, staff, and educators accountable for their actions. This includes ensuring that they are properly trained to recognize antisemitism and respond to it in a way that keeps students safe and fosters a positive learning environment. Accountability is essential to maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive atmosphere for all students. -
Taking an Interest in All Marginalized Groups
While we are particularly focused on combating antisemitism, we also believe that every marginalized group deserves attention and advocacy. We expect the school board to actively engage with and support the needs of all students, regardless of their background, identity, or beliefs. -
Preventing Bias and False Narratives
We ask the school board to ensure that teachers are trained to recognize and prevent their own biases from shaping the classroom environment. Teachers should be held accountable for presenting accurate, unbiased information and for creating a space where false narratives and prejudices do not influence the education being provided. -
Commitment to Bettering Education for All Students
We ask the school board to work toward improving the overall educational experience for every student. This includes ensuring that curricula are inclusive, that diverse perspectives are represented, and that students learn about history in an accurate and unbiased way.
We seek a school board that prioritizes education, inclusivity, and accountability, working to create a safe environment where every student feels respected, valued, and empowered to succeed.
